Chapter Responsibilities

The Southeast Chapter of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) serves the states of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee. The Chapter’s objectives are to raise the standards of practice and achievement in medical communication by:

  • Bringing together those persons within the area of the Chapter who are involved in the communication of medical information so that they may share views, experiences, and goals. Such persons include writers, editors, illustrators, publishers, and those active in research, documentation, audiovisual techniques, public relations, and advertising related to the subject of medicine and the life sciences.
  • Furthering the professional development of Chapter members through educational programs and certification.
  • Promoting high levels of communication by making the Chapter’s educational programs available to all AMWA members and nonmembers.
  • Encouraging nonmembers to become members of AMWA and to participate in Chapter activities.

JoAnna is founder and owner of JPen Communications, LLC, a freelance medical writing business. She also serves as newsletter editor for one of Georgia’s major life sciences organizations. JoAnna looks forward to serving as president of AMWA’s Southeast Chapter and helping connect members throughout the region.

Full Position Description

Madison is an experienced medical writer and editor with over ten years of experience in the field.. She has worked on multiple grant proposals with a current total of more than $105 million in funding. She edited and contributed to manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, as well, and is a co-author on several works, including one in Clinical Pediatrics and another in Pediatric Emergency Care. Madison is on staff at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences as a biomedical writer and editor, working on NIH-funded grant applications in a variety of disciplines. She received her master’s degree in 2014 from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in Professional and Technical Writing and joined AMWA in 2017. Madison has taken an active role in AMWA and hopes to contribute to the overall goals and mission of the organization.

Callie writes technical, instructional, and marketing documents for Data Concepts, Inc. in Nashville, TN. A recent AMWA member, she serves as Committee Chair for the Southeast Medical Writers Book Club. Callie welcomes the opportunity to manage chapter finances and work with the board to grow and support chapter membership.

Full Position Description

Rachel founded The Written Science, LLC to improve the translation of biomedical research into clinical applications. At The Written Science, Rachel creates communication strategies that support scientific innovations, from concept to commercialization. Rachel became a member of AMWA while completing her PhD in biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma. Now, she enjoys exploring the Tennessee Valley and serving the AMWA Southeast Chapter community as secretary.

Full Position Description

Eva, a German medical and marketing translator, is owner and founder of Wordplay Translations, LLC, where she focuses on helping businesses in the US and Germany communicate across the language and cultural divide. Having joined AMWA years ago for the educational offerings, she is now looking forward to taking a more active role and building on the work of previous boards to bring out the vibrant and active potential of the Southeast chapter.
